Are Scientists Really Trying to Bring Mammoths Back to Life?

At least such ambitious plans exist at the British biotechnology and genetic engineering company Colossal Biosciences.

Researchers have found the remains of a woolly mammoth that went extinct about 4,000 years ago, and they are now planning to reconstruct its genome.

To fill in the missing sections of the genetic code, they intend to use DNA from modern Asian elephants, as their genomes are 99.6% similar. If the project is successful, the authors plan to share their technologies with non-profit organizations and government entities.

In addition to the mammoth, they also want to restore the populations of two other extinct species: the dodo bird and the thylacine (Tasmanian tiger).
