Which Animals Cover the Greatest Distances?

Among terrestrial animals that undertake long journeys, reindeer have long been considered the leaders.

A recent study published in Scientific Reports claims that when considering the distance between the starting point and the endpoint, the migrations of reindeer are indeed the longest—some herds travel over 1200 km in both directions between summer and winter pastures.

However, if we calculate the total distance traveled by an animal in a year, the common wolf takes the lead: the same article mentions a male wolf from Mongolia that covered 7247 km in a year.

These kilometers were not part of a seasonal migration—the wolf was simply wandering in search of food. In general, predators need to move a lot to find their prey, so it could be expected that some predatory mammal could break the record of ungulates.
