Why Your Dog Refuses Dry Food

If your dog has started ignoring dry food, it may indicate dental issues, digestive problems, or serious infections.

One reason your dog may suddenly refuse dry food could be dental problems. “It’s just like with people. If you have a toothache, would you chew on crackers?” specialists explain.

Another possible reason is digestive system disorders. “The dog might have picked something up outside, or it was treated by children or relatives. Sometimes digestive issues are accompanied by stomach upset, vomiting, and sometimes just pain. Dogs tend to be patient and only complain in the most extreme cases,” experts comment.

Refusal of dry food can also be caused by stress. “A trip to the vet or a visit from relatives with noisy children,” they list.

Additionally, the reasons may include infectious or parasitic diseases.

The refusal to eat may also be related to weather conditions. For example, in hot weather, animals, like people, may refuse food, specialists note.

Finally, the dog may simply be being picky. “If you had guests the day before who treated the dog to various treats, today it may be expecting a continuation of the feast,” experts add.
