Veterinarians Named Cat Breeds That Are Similar in Character to Dogs

The publication Country Living surveyed veterinarians and breeders to compile a ranking of cat breeds that behave more like dogs, for those owners who cannot afford to get a dog but dream of such a pet.

Siamese Cats

Cats of this breed, like dogs, possess immense loyalty to their owner and form strong social bonds with them, says veterinarian Gemma Renwick from the animal welfare charity PDSA. She is quoted by Country Living.

“As an owner, you will find that Siamese cats constantly follow you, demanding your attention,” the veterinarian explains.

Another feature of this breed is that Siamese cats cannot stand loneliness. They value companionship — a person to curl up with and doze off. Otherwise, expect vocalization — Siamese cats are known for their loud voices.

Gemma Renwick referred to Siamese cats as the “equivalent of a lap dog.”

Siberian Cat

Another cat breed that can make you say, “We got a dog.” Cats of this breed are known for their easygoing nature and playfulness. Siberian cats are also well-suited for families with children.

Breeder Kate Staveley adds that Siberian cats are very intelligent, curious, and trainable.

Turkish Van

The intelligence of these cats is evident in their gaze. They are very active, playful, and adaptable pets. Don’t expect them to curl up on your lap and sleep.

“They are very lively and love to play, which makes them ideal for dog lovers of playful breeds,” notes Gemma Renwick.

However, there can be some challenges with Turkish Vans: although these cats are very energetic and active, they are quite clumsy. In play, they knock everything in their path and may topple things, including valuable items. If you have a Turkish Van, it’s best to remove vases and dishes from shelves.

On the other hand, bathing these cats poses no problems. Like dogs, they are known to enjoy water activities.

Korat

This is one of the oldest cat breeds from Thailand. In size and color, animals of this breed closely resemble Russian Blue cats. However, there are still differences between the breeds.

Korats, like loyal dogs, will accompany you everywhere. You will find your pet on your lap while you watch television. The cat will inevitably settle on your keyboard as soon as you sit down to work on your laptop. Korats are very sociable animals. They are also skilled at opening locks, containers, and cabinets, says Gemma Renwick.

“Korats generally adore people and will be happy in a home where someone is around most of the time,” notes the veterinarian.

Moreover, this breed is very playful and trainable. You can easily teach it to fetch a ball.

Russian Blue

This charming and elegant cat will make an excellent companion for owners who love dogs. An incredibly intelligent cat with strong hunting instincts. It will require a lot of play to satisfy its physical and mental needs.

“Like their Siamese relatives, Russian Blue cats can be very talkative and use their voice to communicate with their owner. It is known that they train their owner, not the other way around,” says the veterinarian.
