Communication with Dogs Slows Biological Aging — Study

Scientists recorded precise biological markers.

Scientists have found that ordinary dogs can be a powerful tool against aging. A new study published in the journal Behavioural Sciences showed that just one hour a week spent with a dog can improve the condition of the body's cells and slow down biological clocks.

This effect was particularly pronounced in women suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), writes the Independent.

The study was conducted by specialists from Florida Atlantic University. They observed 28 female veterans who voluntarily agreed to participate in a service dog training program for injured soldiers. Previously, we wrote about how people choose their pets.

To assess the benefits of such interaction, the researchers used precise biological markers. They measured the length of the participants' telomeres — these are protective "caps" at the ends of chromosomes, which are considered one of the main indicators of biological age. The shorter the telomeres, the faster the process of cellular aging. At the same time, the researchers analyzed saliva samples, monitored heart rates, and recorded the overall condition of the volunteers. The participants were divided into two groups. The first group trained dogs, while the second simply watched educational videos about animals. By the way, researchers recently discovered a "human" type of thinking in dogs.

In women who worked with dogs, the length of telomeres increased, indicating a slowdown in cellular aging. In contrast, those who only watched videos had shorter telomeres, indicating accelerated cellular wear.

At the same time, improvements in mental health were noted in both groups. However, it was the live interaction with animals that had a pronounced positive effect on those who had experienced significant psychological stress.

This discovery confirms that dogs can be not just loyal friends but also true "healers" capable of influencing the deepest biological processes in the human body.
