Bright Week and Kupalishcha: May 7 Weather and Dousing Women with Water

Immediately after Easter begins the Easter week, known as Bright Week, which will last until May 12, when Orthodox Christians will celebrate Krasnaya Gorka. Each day of this week is filled with special meaning, traditions, and omens. Yevseyev Day is noted in the folk calendar.

Orthodox Christians recognized that Bright Week is a time of joy and celebration associated with the resurrection of the Lord. During these days, it is customary not to engage in physical labor. Our ancestors refrained from working in the garden and construction activities. In ancient times, the following actions were prohibited during Bright Week:

Causing quarrels, arguing, and using foul language — such sins could lead to illnesses.
Visiting cemeteries — this is another action that was strictly forbidden during Bright Week. Ahead of us is a special day of remembrance. Radonitsa was established not by chance; it is during this time that Orthodox Christians remember the deceased.
Being anxious and making thoughtless actions. Bright Week is a time to distract oneself from worldly fuss. During these days, one should rid themselves of gloomy thoughts that attract negativity and become the cause of many problems, including family issues.

Tuesday of Bright Week has its own name: Kupalishcha or Kupalnitsa. This name did not arise by chance. In ancient times, those who were late for the morning prayer were to be doused with cold water. People knew that if this was not done, troubles and misfortunes would come to the house.

According to tradition, on Bright Tuesday, only women could come to the church. Men were to stay home, taking care of the household and children.

Kupalishcha: Folk Omens

In the folk calendar, May 7 is marked as Yevseyev Day, or the day of Yevsey, which holds many secrets about the weather. For example, a large number of mosquitoes on this day was considered a good sign, heralding a good harvest. Peasants knew that if Yevseyev Day turned out to be warm and sunny, it was still too early to relax and rejoice — 12 frosty days were expected ahead.
