John Climacus: why it is not recommended to wear dark clothing on April 12

On April 12, Orthodox churches commemorate the memory of St. John Climacus, who lived in the 6th-7th centuries. In the folk calendar, this day is known as John Climacus. In the past, this time was considered dangerous due to the activity of evil spirits, so people tried not to leave their homes without necessity. Women engaged in baking during this period.

On April 12, Orthodox Christians remember the abbot of the Sinai Monastery, John Climacus, who lived at the turn of the 6th and 7th centuries. According to tradition, he was born in Constantinople in 570.

His parents were saints Xenophon and Maria. The boy grew up in a pious family and received a good education. At the age of 16, he went to the Sinai Monastery.

When he turned 20, he took monastic vows. In the monastery, his spiritual mentor was Elder Martyrius, who replaced his parents. After his death, John Climacus decided to go into the desert, where he spent forty years in prayer and fasting. Seeing his diligence, Jesus Christ endowed John with the gift of miracles and foresight.

Although the hermit tried to avoid communication with people, the rumor of his miracles spread quickly. Christians began to come to him from afar. John healed many, helping them to find faith in themselves and their abilities. At the age of 75, he became the abbot of the Sinai Monastery.

This time became particularly fruitful for John Climacus. During this period, he wrote his famous "Ladder," in which he described 30 steps to spiritual perfection. These 30 steps symbolize 30 virtues that lead a Christian to the ideal. After living in the monastery for four years, John went back into the desert, where he died at the age of 80.

John Climacus: folk signs

In the past, people knew that if dandelions bloom by John Climacus, the summer would be short and pass quickly. If on April 12 (March 30 in the old style) cows and bulls lift their heads and exhale loudly, it foretells imminent rain.

Birds can also tell about the weather. If geese fly high in the sky, it indicates abundant precipitation. If birds fly low above the ground, short rains are expected. If ducks gather in flocks, it foretells frosts.

John Climacus: what can be done

On the day of remembrance of Saint John Climacus, women engaged in special baking. They prepared flour products in the shape of a ladder, symbolizing the path to moral perfection.

First, two long strips of dough were baked in the oven, which were laid parallel to each other. Then, when they were ready, pre-prepared pies were carefully placed between them, forming a ladder.

These ladders were distributed to each family member, as it was believed that they would help protect against all misfortunes, including illness and poverty. To ensure these wishes were fulfilled, a small ladder was baked for the house spirit, placed on a plate, and left in a secluded spot along with milk.

John Climacus: what should not be done

John Climacus was considered a time when dark forces became active. This day was regarded as so dangerous that people tried not to leave their homes without special necessity, especially in the evening and at night. On this day, people avoided looking out of windows, so they tightly drew the curtains. During this time, it was forbidden to:

Newlyweds – visit friends. Elders warned about the risk of quarreling with loved ones, and reconciliation may not be possible.
Speak in raised voices. This may awaken the house spirit, who will take revenge on negligent hosts.
Spread rumors about neighbors. A quarrel that flares up may lead to revenge and discord.
Lend money. There is a chance that the debtor will not want to repay the debt or will not be able to do so.
Wear dark clothing. It was believed that such things could attract the attention of evil forces.
