The Number of Rape Cases in Germany Has Sharply Increased

The German police recorded a significant increase in the number of registered rape cases, DW reports.

There were 13,920 reported cases in 2025, which is a 9% increase compared to the previous year.

These figures are based on crime statistics provided by the police of the federal states and reflect fully investigated cases, rather than convictions.

Nevertheless, they provide a clear picture of trends in crime, and national crime statistics are expected to be published soon.

Justice Minister Stephanie Hubig characterized sexual violence against women as a serious issue, calling rape an "abhorrent crime" with lifelong consequences for victims.

Hubig stated that in particularly severe cases, including those involving drugs used for date rape, stricter minimum sentences are necessary.

A bill is expected to be presented to the cabinet soon, with the coalition also planning to tighten penalties for gang rape and cases that lead to pregnancy.
