Which plants can be considered the first spring flowers?

Snowdrops are considered a symbol of spring, as they are the first to appear after winter. Is this really the case?

In fact, the first plant to awaken after winter is the hazel — this plant is wind-pollinated, as noted by botanist Arkady SKURATOVICH. Then other wind-pollinated plants begin to wake up: alder, aspen, and in the raised bogs — Eriophorum vaginatum.

With the arrival of warmth and the awakening of insects, the flowering of insect-pollinated plants begins. One such plant is the snowdrop, botanically known as Galanthus.

Theoretically, the weed Stellaria media, or chickweed, can also be classified as a spring flower. It starts to bloom simultaneously with wind-pollinated plants. “Chickweed blooms until the snow, goes into winter with buds, and as soon as the snow melts, it immediately flowers,” the expert noted.
