What Happens If You Pull Out a Gray Hair: A Dermatologist's Answer

Pulling out gray hairs can lead to damage to the hair follicle and even result in no new hair growing in that spot. This was stated by dermatologist D. Tobin.

According to him, the common belief that after removing one gray hair, two more grow back is not true. Each follicle forms only one hair, so such an effect is impossible.

However, this does not mean that plucking is harmless. As the specialist noted, removing a hair with its root can damage the follicle itself. Sometimes this can be noticed by a small trace of blood on the skin. In such cases, there is a chance that the structure of the follicle will be disrupted and it will not be able to recover.

If this happens, a new hair will not grow in that area. That is why, according to the doctor, it is undesirable to pull out gray hairs.

Tobin also explained that the timing of graying is largely determined by heredity. However, some factors can accelerate this process. Among them are prolonged stress, lack of sleep, and a deficiency of nutrients in the body.

The words of the dermatologist are cited by The Guardian.
