In 2024, the spring equinox will take place on March 20. This time is considered special, when powerful energy flows surround us, and it is important to direct them in the right direction.
The equinox is an intriguing astronomical event that occurs twice a year. First, the sun crosses the equator, moving from the southern hemisphere to the northern, and in autumn — vice versa. At these moments, the duration of day and night becomes almost equal, regardless of your location.
Since ancient times, the spring equinox has been celebrated as a holiday when one can attract luck and love for the entire year, as well as fulfill the most cherished wishes — provided that the celebration is organized correctly.
During this time, fairs were held with festivities, entertainment, songs, and dances. People played lapta, danced in circles, and arranged playful fistfights. The climax of the holiday was the evening when young men and women would light a large bonfire, over which the brave would jump. There was also another fun activity involving fire: they would set wheels on fire and roll them down a hill into a river. Of course, divination was also part of the festivities. The holiday resembled Maslenitsa, although its scale was usually more modest, as the spring equinox often coincided with Lent. Nevertheless, even during fasting days, people tried to have fun.
As for treats, the holiday was always associated with the arrival of spring. Therefore, they baked larks — sweet rolls in the shape of birds. They also prepared unleavened dumplings, boiled oatmeal jelly, and placed treats on the windowsill, calling for spring. Some of the dumplings were later fed to livestock to ensure that the animals were healthy and grew well.
