According to the specialist, chewing apples increases saliva production in the mouth. This fluid contains minerals and naturally rinses the teeth. As a result, acidity in the mouth decreases, and the proliferation of pathogenic microorganisms involved in cavity formation is restrained.
An additional effect is related to the texture of the fruit. The dense pulp and active chewing partially remove soft dental plaque from the enamel surface. Thus, apples can serve as a kind of auxiliary means for maintaining dental cleanliness.
However, the doctor emphasizes that such an effect cannot replace comprehensive oral care. Regular tooth brushing and other hygiene procedures remain necessary.
The specialist also debunked the common belief that apples can whiten teeth. According to her, a change in enamel color is only possible through the action of chemicals on the pigments inside the tooth, so ordinary fruits do not provide such a result.
Moreover, excessive consumption of apples can have the opposite effect. The acids they contain, in large amounts, can negatively affect tooth enamel.
After a person eats an apple, the dentist advises rinsing the mouth with water. This helps remove residual acid and reduce its potential impact on the teeth.
