It has been five or six years since I planted two sea buckthorn seedlings in the garden. However, there are still no berries. What is the reason?
Sea buckthorn may not produce flowers for the following reasons:
1. If the seedlings were obtained through cuttings, there is a possibility that you only have female specimens. Since sea buckthorn is a dioecious plant, both male and female specimens are necessary for fruiting. Additionally, in cold winters, flower buds may freeze.
2. If the seedlings are grown from seeds, they begin to bear fruit only in the 8th to 10th year. Typically, 50–60% of the plants from seeds are male and 40–50% are female. At a young age, it is quite difficult to distinguish them. After 4–5 years, female plants can be identified by their buds — they are smaller and closer to the shoot than those of male specimens.
