Can Excess Vitamins Be Harmful?

Yes, excess vitamins in the body can lead to hypovitaminosis, says doctor Svetlana CHAIKOVSKAYA.

This is especially true for fat-soluble vitamins: A, D, E, and K.

Excessive amounts of vitamin D can lead to calcium accumulation in soft tissues, liver, kidneys, lungs, heart, and blood vessels. This condition manifests with symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, skin itching, headaches, discomfort in the eyes, diarrhea, and frequent urination.

Excess vitamin E can cause gastrointestinal disturbances, fatigue, headaches, muscle weakness, and diplopia. Excessive intake of vitamin A may lead to nausea, vision disturbances, fatigue, headaches, hair loss, as well as problems with the heart, kidneys, liver fibrosis, and central nervous system disorders. An overdose of vitamin K can cause the destruction of red blood cells, which in turn leads to anemia.
