Maslenitsa in 2024 begins on March 11.
In 2024, Maslenitsa will be celebrated from March 11 to March 17. The main festivities take place on the last day, which is also known as Forgiveness Sunday.
The first three days of the holiday: Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday (March 11, 12, and 13) are popularly known as Narrow Maslenitsa. The remaining days: Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday (March 14, 15, 16, and 17) are considered Wide Maslenitsa.
Maslenitsa is an ancient holiday of the Eastern Slavs, symbolizing the arrival of spring after the winter cold. During Maslenitsa week, people built slides, flooded ice rinks, erected snow towns, and rode horses. Young people sang songs about love and had fun. On the last day of the holiday, a straw effigy is burned.
The main dish during Maslenitsa week is pancakes with butter. It is customary to prepare them in large quantities to treat relatives, friends, and neighbors.
