What is the purpose of liming the soil?

Liming has a comprehensive effect on the soil.

In particular:

it contributes to the optimal development of the root system of plants;
it significantly increases the efficiency of agricultural crops in utilizing mineral and organic fertilizers applied to the soil;
it enhances the availability of poorly soluble nutrient compounds present in acidic soil for plants;
it activates the biological processes of a number of microorganisms (nitrogen-fixing bacteria, nitrifiers, and others), which can accumulate up to 50-70 kg of nitrogen per hectare, thereby reducing the need for nitrogen mineral fertilizers.

According to many years of field and laboratory research, the yield of major crops when liming increases (in grain units) by 5-7 centners per hectare or more. Therefore, this agronomic measure is generally economically viable for most farms located on acidic soils.
