What Horn Became a Symbol of Abundance?

It was a goat's horn.

The horn of plenty, filled with the fruits of the earth, is an important element in depictions of gods associated with fertility and winemaking, such as Demeter in Ancient Greece or Ceres in Ancient Rome, as well as Dionysus (Bacchus), Priapus, and Flora. This horn was also associated with allegorical figures symbolizing Earth, Fortune, Autumn, Concord, and Hospitality.

According to Greek mythology, Amalthea — the divine goat-nymph — nursed the infant Zeus, whom his mother Rhea hid from his father, the formidable Cronus, in a cave on Mount Ida on the island of Crete. One day, the goat broke her horn on a tree. Zeus filled it with fruits and named it the “horn of plenty.” When Zeus overthrew his father and became the leader of the Olympians, he took the goat with him to the sky and turned her into a star.

Capella — a yellow double star, whose name translates from Latin as “little goat,” is located in the constellation Auriga in the Northern Hemisphere.
