There is so much snow outside. My five-year-old son is eager to go sledding and play in the snow. Is it possible to walk in the frost?
According to pediatrician Natalia Strizhakova, it is ideal to walk in any weather, but our winters with their high humidity require caution. Children over three years old can spend up to 1–1.5 hours outside at temperatures up to –10...–12 °C if the weather is clear and the child is active.
In high humidity, walks are better postponed. If the little one is just sitting in a sled, like in a stroller, then the walking time is reduced.
The pediatrician also reminded that infants under one year old should stay indoors at temperatures below –10 °C. Cold air does not warm up in the respiratory tract, which can lead to the risk of ARVI and laryngitis.
For walking in the frost, the principle of layering is important: it is better to wear two warm sweaters than one very thick one. The air layer between the layers retains heat much more effectively. There should be one more layer of clothing than an adult would wear.
Shoes should not pinch or constrict the foot to avoid disrupting circulation.
Before going out, use special cold creams to protect exposed areas of the face.
