On this day, Orthodox Christians honor the memory of Aggey — one of the last prophets of the Old Testament, who prophesied in 520 BC.
Only a couple of days remained until the New Year, and it seemed that the earth was transforming for the holiday. Saint Spyridon illuminated everything around with bright sunshine, the benefactor Nicholas sprinkled snow, and the prophet Aggey covered it with frost, as people said.
According to the belief, Aggey fights for the purity of the human soul, encourages hard work, and guides people on the true path. Despite his good nature, the prophet can become angry at unjust actions and bring such frost that it won’t let up until the very Epiphany. On this night, it was customary to light bonfires and throw snowmen made of snow into them. If the fire quickly goes out, it will be clear and sunny during the Holy Days.
Weather Signs
As Aggey is, so will April be. Frost on the street — warm weather during the Holy Days. Frost — cold weather until Epiphany. Frosty patterns on the glass — the next 20 days will be cold. Bad weather and cold — a harsh winter. Wind and snow lying closely to the fence — a poor harvest in summer.
