Sally Adams, a health expert and lecturer at the University of Birmingham, explained that not all alcoholic beverages cause severe hangovers. Making the right choice will allow you to celebrate New Year's without painful memories of the past celebration in the morning.
In an interview with the Daily Mail, the specialist explained that it is advisable to prefer drinks with low levels of congeners — chemical substances formed during the fermentation of alcohol. These substances give drinks their flavor and aroma, but at the same time, they intensify hangover symptoms. Therefore, choosing drinks with fewer congeners may reduce the risk of severe intoxication.
Sally Adams noted that the strongest hangover is caused by red wine and bourbon — a type of American whiskey. At the same time, vodka, gin, and beer contain fewer congeners, which contributes to a better feeling after consumption. However, it is important to remember that any alcohol should be consumed in moderation; otherwise, the consequences will be unpleasant regardless of the drink's composition. For intoxication and hangover, the quantity consumed is more important than the type of alcohol.
Particular attention should be paid to snacks, especially if you plan to drink more than one or two shots. Meat, fish, and cheese are common elements of a festive table, as is sauerkraut. However, all these products contain histamine, which can exacerbate a hangover. Therefore, plan your snacks, engage with guests at the table, and remember that everything is good in moderation.
