November 4 — Day of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God: how this day was celebrated in ancient times

November 4 is an important holiday in Christianity — the Day of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God.

The first mention of this icon dates back to 1579. After a devastating fire that destroyed a large part of Kazan, a nine-year-old girl named Matrona had a dream. The Mother of God pointed Matrona to a place where she was to go to retrieve the icon. Upon waking, the girl fulfilled the will of the Virgin Mary, and thus everyone learned about the sacred image of the Mother of God, named the Kazan Icon.

Copies of the icon were made, one of which belonged to Ivan the Terrible, and the other to Peter the Great. People treated this icon with great reverence, and it was venerated. The current location of the original icon is unknown.

On this day, people went to church, asking for intercession for themselves and their loved ones before the icon. By evening, tables were laid — housewives tried to prepare the most delicious and original dishes. The day was considered favorable for organizing wedding celebrations.

Weather Signs
