Five Important Autumn Pest Prevention Measures

Proper autumn treatment of the garden and vegetable patch will protect the crops and reduce the risk that insects and other pests will hinder the plants from developing normally and producing a good harvest.

Here’s what you need to do with your plants and soil to avoid suffering from pest invasions next season.

Remove Infected Plants

Pull out and destroy all plants that are infested with insects and other pests. This should be done in the autumn, after the plants have stopped bearing fruit. Don’t forget to also clear fallen leaves, branches, and other plant debris from the beds, as insects may hide in them.

Destroy Plant Debris

Do not compost infected plants, as pests can survive in compost. Instead, place the pest-infested plant waste in sealed bags and dispose of or burn them if possible and permitted in your area.

Treat the Soil

Autumn soil treatment can help eliminate harmful insects that have decided to hide in the soil for the winter. Turn the soil to a depth of about 15 centimeters to bring pests to the surface. There, they will be more vulnerable to frost and their natural enemies.

Encourage Natural Predators

Birds and beneficial insects can help combat pest insects. Consider installing birdhouses or planting flowers that attract beneficial insects in your area.

Choose Resistant Varieties

Some plant varieties are less attractive to pest insects, so choose those that are more resistant to pest invasions.

Following these recommendations will reduce the likelihood of pests reappearing and improve the health of your garden in the next growing season.
