How to Properly Prepare Your Summer Cottage Water Supply for Winter?

Only completely drained heating and water supply systems in the summer cottage will allow for a peaceful winter, warned construction expert Fyodor Vasilyev.

Filling it with antifreeze is a bad option, he believes, especially when it comes to drinking water supply pipes. Here is a step-by-step action plan.

Step 1. Disconnect the supply source.

The pumping station or central inlet is shut off, after which all taps in the house are opened from top to bottom. This method works by gravity: the water drains down the slopes, and air replaces it without creating blockages.

Step 2. Drain water from each unit.

Water must be drained not only from the main line but also from each unit. Toilets and traps should be completely drained. Tanks are wiped down, and a little salty solution or vegetable oil can be poured into the traps to prevent them from drying out and cracking.

Step 3. Check household appliances.

Dishwashers and washing machines have their own drainage hoses and filters. If water is left in the pump or hose, these parts may burst after freezing.

Step 4. Check outdoor taps, pipes, and the metering unit.

They should not only be shut off inside but also opened outside to ensure the casing is completely empty.
