Why It Is Very Important to Ventilate the Bedroom: A New Study

Japanese specialists have established that the quality of sleep is directly influenced by the ventilation of the bedroom.

According to a study published in the journal Science and Technology for the Built Environment, sleep is disrupted when the CO₂ level in the air exceeds 1000 ppm. Optimal sleeping conditions are provided at concentrations of up to 800 ppm.

After analyzing 17 scientific papers and 22 sets of experimental data, the researchers concluded that current building codes do not ensure adequate air exchange. To maintain optimal CO₂ levels, at least 8 liters of fresh air per second per person is required — about twice as much as current standards prescribe.

As noted by the study leader M. Akimoto, insufficient ventilation increases drowsiness, reduces cognitive abilities, and raises the risk of developing cardiovascular diseases. Experts believe it is necessary to revise air exchange standards in residential buildings and implement updated regulations.

According to scientists, the microclimate in the bedroom is as important a factor for longevity as a balanced diet and regular physical activity.
