How to Properly Form Raspberry Bushes?

The formation of the bush begins in the first year, although usually one or two shoots grow in the first year after planting. Each bush is allocated 70 cm in the row. A trellis should be installed, and one galvanized wire should be secured at a height of 120 cm. In the fall, the shoots are tied to it if the variety is sufficiently winter-hardy.

If it is not winter-hardy, then the shoots are bent under the snow, and in spring, they are tied to the wire. After two years of growth, the fruiting shoots are cut off after harvesting or in September, and then the shoots are tied to the wire or bent under the snow (they will be tied in the following spring).

Finally, after the third summer, the bush is fully formed, with more than 10 shoots. The fruiting shoots are removed, and among the new shoots, the 7 best are selected and tied to the wire in the fall for all winter-hardy varieties. Since each bush is allocated 70 cm in the row, this effectively results in tying the shoots every 10 cm. The shoots of each bush, in the shape of a fan, occupy their 70 cm without interfering with neighboring bushes.

Most varieties, starting from the third year, produce 10 or more replacement shoots. These are strong one-year shoots, and at least three excess ones must be cut off, while the others are tied. However, in some bushes, there are fewer than 7 replacement shoots. In this case, all are tried to be preserved, but suckers should not be left. Such a bush requires additional care and feeding, if possible.
