Limescale consists of deposits of calcium and magnesium salts. These elements gradually accumulate in the body, and with excess calcium, its excretion falls on the kidneys.
Over time, this can lead to the formation of stones or impaired kidney function due to increased stress, which raises the risk of chronic diseases, says endocrinologist Evgeny Karkliny.
According to the doctor, such water is especially dangerous for people over 50: excess calcium reduces the elasticity of blood vessels and contributes to the formation of atherosclerotic plaques. This is particularly harmful for those who have a vitamin D deficiency — in this case, calcium accumulates in the kidneys, the expert emphasized.
To avoid such problems, the specialist recommends using only purified water, regularly removing limescale, and monitoring the condition of the kettle.
