How many times can there be an Indian summer in autumn?

In the first decade of September, we were delighted by Indian summer. And that's it. Interestingly, can there be two or three Indian summers in autumn?

Yes, it can, said meteorologist Olga BAKLANOVA.

Classic Indian summer is characterized by mild, sunny, warm weather lasting at least 4–5 days. In some years, Indian summer begins in mid-September, in others – at the end of September or even in early October. However, it should be noted that approximately once every 7 years, there is no Indian summer.

Indian summer represents the first autumn period with stable anticyclonic weather. Nighttime cooling is accompanied by cooling of the soil and air, but it is not as strong as in deep autumn.

At the same time, the warming of the near-surface air and soil during the day in the period of Indian summer, although quite high, is not as intense as in summer, so the heat is never strong. On certain days in September, air temperatures can rise to +22°C, and sometimes even to +28 +29°C. Night temperatures can reach +10°C.

The duration of good weather varies from year to year. Usually, it lasts from several days to two weeks, sometimes longer.

In 1975, Indian summer in Latvia lasted a whole month starting from September 8. In certain years, several periods of Indian summer can be observed. For example, in 1966, the first warm period was from September 12 to September 18, the second – from October 1 to October 13, and the last – the third – from October 16 to October 25. In the warm autumn of 2005, two periods of Indian summer were noted – from September 1 to September 15 and from September 27 to October 7.
