A Psychologist Explained How to Identify Autumn Depression in Yourself by 5 Signs

Every autumn, many complain about fatigue, drowsiness, and melancholy. Is it a temporary blues or already depression?

Some recurring symptoms may indicate the onset of seasonal depression. If not noticed, it can lead to a prolonged disruption of the usual rhythm, said psychologist Olga Romaniv.

What Indicates Autumn Depression

At least 5 signals of impending depression are identified, including:

constant drowsiness;
problems with concentration;
unwarranted pessimism;
loss of interest in usual pleasures;
disruptions in eating habits.

In practice, it looks like this. Melatonin production changes in the cold season — getting up in the mornings becomes harder. The level of serotonin decreases due to a lack of sunlight, and the brain starts to function worse.

Throughout the day, a person is plagued by gloomy thoughts, even if there are no reasons for concern; hobbies and meetings with loved ones no longer bring the same joy.

Additionally, some people lose their appetite, while others experience an increase. There is a craving for calorie-dense, sweet, and fatty foods, which leads to extra pounds.

How to Alleviate the Condition

Seasonal depression will not disappear in one day. Consultation with a specialist — a doctor or psychologist — will be necessary. However, simple steps can help reduce the risk of the ailment.

To do this, one should sleep for at least 8 hours and go to bed no later than 11:00 PM. It is also important to allocate time each day for walks in the fresh air, communicate with people, and, of course, include fruits, vegetables, greens, and dairy products in the diet. The functioning of the intestines is closely related to our psycho-emotional state, so it is important to maintain variety in the diet.
