Scientists Create Waterless Toilet Based on Mushrooms

The University of British Columbia (UBC) has presented the world's first waterless toilet based on mushroom mycelium — MycoToilet.

It turns human waste into nutritious compost without the use of water, electricity, or chemicals. The pilot project started on September 26: for six weeks, scientists will monitor waste processing and odor levels.

The system is capable of producing about 600 liters of soil and 2000 liters of liquid fertilizers per year.

MycoToilet is a modular solution with minimal maintenance requirements, suitable for parks and remote areas. The structure made of cedar panels is equipped with ventilation, ensuring comfort and environmental friendliness. Mycelium effectively decomposes waste and eliminates odors, as confirmed by laboratory tests. This is an innovation in sustainable sanitation without harming nature.
