Memory deteriorates with age — this is a natural process. However, in some cases, we accelerate it ourselves.
American researchers published the results of a long-term experiment in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. They proved that the regular inclusion of processed meat and sweet "soda" in the diet is associated with accelerated decline in cognitive abilities.
What the Study Showed
The project involved more than 5,000 Americans over the age of 55. For 7 years, scientists collected statistics on the volunteers' diets and tested their memory using special tests.
As a result of the experiment, the researchers found that daily consumption of processed meat — whether it be sausage, bacon, or ham — increases the likelihood of memory decline by 17%. Each serving of sweet "soda" adds another 6% to this risk.
Other categories of ultra-processed products — snacks, frozen convenience foods, baked goods — were found to be less dangerous for cognitive health.
