This means helps not only in weight loss but can also protect against kidney stone formation and even possible dementia.
The chemical compound known as theobromine is being discussed. Researchers from Zhengzhou University (China) conducted a review of numerous scientific studies to explore the effects and mechanisms of theobromine on health, as well as to gather data on its potential therapeutic applications. It turned out that this alkaloid has many beneficial properties, reports Doctorpiter.
Theobromine is found in large quantities in cocoa beans, and therefore in cocoa and chocolate. It is especially abundant in dark chocolate — 5-7 times more than in milk chocolate. There are also other plant sources of this beneficial substance, such as guarana and tea.
Thus, the Chinese scientists came to an encouraging conclusion: theobromine in moderate doses contributes to weight loss by activating lipid metabolism.
“In adipose tissue, theobromine promotes the transformation of white adipocytes into brown ones, which enhances fat breakdown and contributes to weight loss, thereby preventing obesity-related diseases,” the study states.
Moreover, according to the authors of the work, theobromine is capable of:
* improving cognitive functions and reducing the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease;
* supporting the immune system due to its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. It protects epithelial barriers and reduces the risk of dermatitis, inflammatory bowel disease, and osteoarthritis;
* preventing the formation of urate stones in the kidneys by suppressing the crystallization of uric acid salts;
* dealing with edema — its natural diuretic properties increase urine production, reducing fluid retention in the body;
* supporting cardiovascular health.
“We believe that more research is needed on the preventive and therapeutic effects of theobromine in brain diseases such as stroke, depression, and Alzheimer’s disease, as well as to study the related mechanisms. Furthermore, the mechanism of action of theobromine in combating obesity also requires further investigation,” the researchers conclude.
