In their study, they compared the metrics of people who either soaked in a hot tub or cycled for the same amount of time.
The results showed that hot water increases blood flow, raises body temperature, and elevates heart rate just like physical exercise. These parameters can improve cardiovascular health, promote cell growth and recovery, and act as an antidepressant. The researchers also noted that both running and bathing can lower blood pressure, reduce inflammation, and even affect blood sugar levels in people with type 2 diabetes.
However, the scientists warned that water treatments will not help in the fight against excess weight, improving muscle mass, and bone density.
The study's author, Charles Stewart, emphasizes that his team's findings are significant for anyone looking to maintain their health. "Many people still lack the desire to exercise. They do not want to work out due to a lack of time and motivation. For older adults or those suffering from chronic illnesses, physical activity can cause pain, which obviously limits both ability and willingness," Stewart noted. He added that despite this, physical exercise remains one of the best ways to improve health, so if a person cannot engage in sports, a sauna or bath can be a great alternative.
