With the approach of the New Year holidays, the issue of hangovers and ways to overcome them becomes particularly relevant. Cardiologist Alexander Myasnikov explained which methods can help cope with a hangover and which can be dangerous.
Doctor Myasnikov noted that a hangover is a sign of serious alcohol intoxication, and the body will feel the effects of poisoning until full recovery over a certain period of time. The recovery process can take about 48 hours.
“During this period, it is highly discouraged to engage in physical activity, including sports, as well as to drive. Even if it seems that the condition has improved and there are no pain sensations. A common mistake during a hangover is visiting a bathhouse. The body is already dehydrated, and the situation only worsens in the bath,” emphasizes the doctor.
In addition to dehydration, a decrease in salt levels in the body is observed during a hangover, so one of the most common remedies is morning brine. However, it can be dangerous for people with hypertension; they are better off drinking water. It is also beneficial to eat chocolate with nuts, which helps replenish magnesium deficiency, the level of which also decreases during a hangover.
Fermented dairy products and fatty broths can slightly alleviate the condition. Among the most effective treatment methods, the doctor highlights healthy, strong, and prolonged sleep. However, the main remedy for a hangover is moderation in alcohol consumption.
“What you definitely should not do is try to ‘drink away the hangover.’ A few shots to relieve a headache will only help for a short time, and then the condition will worsen again. Under no circumstances should paracetamol be used to relieve a headache. In combination with alcohol, this substance becomes a poison for the liver and can lead to toxic damage to the organ,” warns Doctor Myasnikov.
