Cocoa Improves Vision - Study

Scientists from the Complutense University of Madrid and the Spanish National Research Council report in the Journal of Functional Foods that 2.5 grams of cocoa powder significantly improve vision.

The study involved several dozen young people aged 20 to 24. Participants were offered a glass of milk with dissolved cocoa powder, a glass of milk with a crushed mixture of berries (raspberries, red and black currants, blueberries), or just a glass of milk.

Cocoa contains many bioactive compounds known as flavonols, while berries are rich in anthocyanins. The aim of the experiment was to determine how these components affect vision. The results showed that cocoa indeed improves vision, while milk with berries had no effect.

However, it is worth noting that this refers to vision in bright daylight; in twilight conditions, vision with cocoa remained at the same level as without it. The authors of the study explain this by stating that flavonols in cocoa affect not so much the eye itself but the brain: the sensitivity of the retina remains the same, but attention and the function of the nerve centers responsible for processing visual signals improve.
