Latvian chess player Alena Tolmacheva won first place at the European Championship for juniors, which is taking place in Montenegro, the Latvian Chess Federation reports.
The 12-year-old athlete achieved seven victories in nine games, finished one game in a draw, and suffered one defeat.
Tolmacheva scored 7.5 points and shared first place with Georgian representative Tea Rusitashvili; however, based on additional criteria, the Latvian proved to be stronger and won the title of European champion. The third place was taken by Polish chess player Alicja Gruszecka.
Nearly 1200 players participated in the European Championship for juniors, competing in six age groups.
