When it comes to the most dangerous birds, the southern cassowary (Casuarius casuarius) comes to mind.
This majestic bird reaches a height of up to 2 meters and can weigh up to 76 kilograms. With its impressive appearance featuring glossy feathers and a strange helmet on its head, the cassowary poses a real threat.
It has powerful legs with razor-sharp claws capable of inflicting deep wounds. Although episodes of cassowary attacks on humans are rare, they do occasionally happen. For instance, in 2019, a pet cassowary was responsible for the death of a Florida resident. However, the likelihood of being killed by a cassowary is much lower than, for example, dying from a cow.
To avoid trouble, it is better to stay away from these birds, especially if you are trying to feed them or are near their offspring. Cassowaries are threatened with extinction, with only about 4,000 individuals remaining in the wild. Respecting these amazing creatures will help preserve and increase their population.
