Autumn is the best time to remember apples.
The scientifically proven properties of the fruit were discussed by cardiologist Maria Chaikovskaya.
How Apples Affect the Cardiovascular System
According to the doctor, regular consumption of apples helps lower levels of "bad" cholesterol and strengthen blood vessels.
"In particular, apples have the ability to reduce cholesterol — 2 apples a day lead to a decrease of 0.14 mmol/L of LDL and improve the elasticity of blood vessels," Chaikovskaya specified.
This effect is explained by the high content of pectin — a natural fiber that binds cholesterol and removes it from the body. Additionally, apples contain:
- polyphenols;
- vitamin C;
- quercetin.
How Apples Benefit the Nervous System
The doctor urged special attention to quercetin — a plant flavonoid that is actively studied in relation to the prevention of Alzheimer's disease.
"[Quercetin] has neuroprotective properties in preclinical models and is discussed for the prevention and treatment of Alzheimer's disease," the cardiologist added.
Regular consumption of apples, especially with the skin where the concentration of quercetin is highest, helps maintain memory, concentration, and the functioning of the nervous system.
How Apples Benefit Mental Health
Interestingly, not only the taste but also the smell of apples affects well-being.
Research by Australian scientists has shown that the aroma of the fruit reduces the physiological response to stress — normalizing heart rate and helping the nervous system recover more quickly after exertion.
