Kefir May Protect Teeth from Cavities and Gum Inflammation

Kefir may reduce the likelihood of developing cavities and gum inflammation due to its effect on the oral microbiota. This is stated in a review published in Dentistry Journal.

Researchers have found that regular consumption of kefir reduces the amount of Streptococcus mutans — the main bacteria causing cavities, weakens plaque formation, and improves indicators in periodontitis.

Scientists suggest that this is related to the probiotic action of the microorganisms contained in kefir. They compete with pathogens, produce organic acids and antimicrobial compounds, stabilizing the ecological system of the oral cavity.

At the same time, specialists note that the data are still heterogeneous: there were variations in types of kefir, culture compositions, dosages (from 100 to 250 ml per day), and duration of intake. Therefore, attributing pronounced "therapeutic" properties to the drink is premature, although the positive effect is beyond doubt.

It is also important to consider that kefir is a live fermented product. Immunocompromised individuals are advised to consult a doctor before consuming any probiotics.
