France Lowers Wine Production Forecast Due to Summer Heat and Fires

The French Ministry of Agriculture has revised its forecast for the total volume of wine production in 2025 — it now stands at 36 million hectoliters. This is 1% less than last year and 16% below the average for the last five years.

The main reason for the decline has been extreme weather conditions: heat and drought, especially in August, accelerated grape ripening, reduced yields, and worsened berry quality. Additionally, large-scale wildfires destroyed significant areas of vineyards in the south of the country.

The largest losses are expected in Bordeaux, Languedoc-Roussillon, and Alsace, where the harvest may decrease by 2–9%. An exception is the Champagne region, where production, on the contrary, increased by 14%.

This is the most significant production decline since 1995, which seriously affects the wine industry and export opportunities for France.
