American researchers have found out how daily consumption of watermelon affects the bodies of people with high blood pressure.

The results of their work were published in the journal Nutrients.

For a month, 39 participants in the experiment were given either a control drink or 1–2 cups of watermelon pulp per day. Daily measurements did not show significant changes in blood pressure; however, in the blood of volunteers consuming watermelon, the level of L-arginine increased and the ratio with the molecule ADMA improved. These indicators are directly related to the production of nitric oxide, which helps to dilate blood vessels and protects them from damage.

Thus, even without a significant reduction in blood pressure, watermelon demonstrated the ability to support the functioning of the heart and blood vessels. According to scientists, regular consumption of this fruit improves endothelial function and reduces the risk of cardiovascular diseases.

Researchers note that a higher dose or longer duration of watermelon consumption may be required for a more pronounced effect. In the future, specialists intend to compare the effects of fresh fruit with amino acid concentrates.
