Despite police warnings about intensified checks on the roads, a large number of drivers were detained in Ligo in Latvia for operating vehicles under the influence of alcohol.

According to the State Police of Latvia, 20 drivers were detained for driving under the influence just yesterday. In total, since June 20, 61 drivers have already been caught driving while intoxicated during the first four holiday weekends.

The highest number of such offenders — seven people — were detained in Vidzeme. Four drunk drivers were identified in the Riga region, Latgale, and Zemgale, and one in Kurzeme.

For 14 of those detained, the level of intoxication was so serious that they face criminal charges. In such cases, vehicle confiscation or recovery of its value is provided for.

The State Police promises to intensively monitor traffic both today and tomorrow throughout Latvia, paying special attention to drivers who may be under the influence of alcohol or other intoxicating substances.

The police emphasize that one should only get behind the wheel when sober. If alcohol was consumed during the celebrations, it is necessary to arrange for a safe return home in advance. It is equally important to prevent friends, relatives, or acquaintances from driving while intoxicated.

As the police note, often one timely conversation or the confiscation of car keys can prevent a tragedy.

Last year, during the holiday of Jāņi, 15 people were injured and one person died in traffic accidents.

This year, the holidays are accompanied by unusually long weekends, which is generally associated with an increase in the number of serious accidents.

During the first four holiday weekends, three people have already died and 51 people have been injured as a result of traffic accidents in Latvia.
