The State Border Guard of Latvia prevented 136 attempts to illegally cross the border from Belarus in one day. Since the beginning of the year, the number of such attempts has already exceeded four thousand.
On Tuesday, Latvian border guards prevented 136 attempts to illegally cross the border from Belarus. This was reported by LETA, citing the State Border Guard.
According to the agency, since the beginning of 2026, a total of 4,132 people have been detained for illegal border crossing.
The flow of migrants from the Belarusian direction has remained one of the biggest challenges for Latvian security services for several consecutive years.
Due to the ongoing pressure, the government has extended the enhanced border security regime until June 30. The special regime is in effect in Ludza, Kraslava, and Augsdaugava regions, Daugavpils, as well as in the Kaunata parish of the Rezekne region.
Latvian authorities continue to accuse Belarus of orchestrating migration pressure on the external border of the European Union.
The situation at the eastern border has remained tense for several years. For comparison, last year border guards prevented more than 12,000 attempts to illegally cross the border.
In some cases, however, migrants were allowed to enter the country on humanitarian grounds — for example, due to health conditions or other emergency circumstances.
Last year, there were 31 such cases, while the year before there were 26.
Amid the rising number of attempts to illegally cross the border, Latvia continues to strengthen security measures, including additional patrolling, engineering fortifications of the border, and involving the military.
In recent years, the issue of securing the eastern border has become not only a migration issue for Latvia but also a matter of national security.
Authorities have repeatedly warned that migration flows could be used as a tool of hybrid pressure against the Baltic States and the European Union.
