In the past 24 hours, 158 road traffic accidents were registered in Latvia. Nineteen people were injured in the accidents, including pedestrians, cyclists, and electric scooter riders.
On Friday, 158 road traffic accidents occurred on the roads of Latvia, reported the State Police. There were injuries in 18 accidents.
Nineteen people were injured, including two pedestrians, six cyclists, and two electric scooter riders.
This shows that with the onset of the warmer season, there is a noticeable increase in vulnerable road users — cyclists and micromobility users.
One serious accident occurred late in the evening in Jelgava on Liela Street. Two passenger cars and a cargo minibus collided there.
According to the State Fire and Rescue Service, rescuers had to extract one person from the minibus. The injured person was handed over to medical personnel.
After the accident, firefighters also cleared the roadway using an absorbent. Work at the scene was completed after midnight.
In addition to accidents, the police continued checks on drivers. Eight motorists were detained for driving under the influence in one day.
In three cases, drivers were held administratively responsible, while five cases were classified as criminal offenses. In Latvia, criminal liability arises at a higher blood alcohol level or under serious circumstances of the violation.
Additionally, 223 drivers were fined for speeding in one day.
This remains one of the most frequent problems on the roads — along with driving under the influence, speeding often leads to severe consequences in accidents.
