On Saturday morning in the Kraslava region, a drone fell into Lake Drižis, which exploded upon contact with the water. Police, rescuers, and the National Armed Forces are working at the scene.

In the Kombul parish of the Kraslava region, another incident involving a drone occurred on Saturday morning in Latvia. According to the State Police, around 8:00 AM, residents reported a drone falling into Lake Drižis.

The police reported that upon contact with the water, the unmanned aerial vehicle detonated. There were no injuries as a result of the incident.

Police officers immediately arrived at the scene to begin surveying the area. Later, debris, presumably belonging to the unmanned aerial vehicle, was discovered.

Due to the large area to be surveyed, additional forces were called in for the operation. State Police officers with their own drone, rescuers with a boat, and the National Armed Forces are working at the site.

Residents have been urged not to approach the scene and to report any possible found fragments of the drone to the police.

In recent months, such incidents have been occurring more frequently in Latvia, especially in Latgale and Vidzeme. Previously, residents of these regions had already received warnings on their phones about the possible approach of drones related to the Russian-Ukrainian war.

Several such devices have previously fallen and exploded on the territory of the country. One of the most high-profile cases occurred on May 7 in Rēzekne, where a drone exploded at a rarely used oil depot.

At that time, the incident caused a serious political crisis. After criticism of the authorities' response, the Minister of Defense resigned, followed by the collapse of Prime Minister Evika Siliņa's government.

Negotiations are currently ongoing in Latvia to form a new cabinet, but until it is approved, Siliņa's government continues to perform its duties.

For residents of border regions, such reports are gradually becoming part of a new reality — especially against the backdrop of the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine and the activity of drones near the borders.
