Terrifying Smoke Over Rezekne: Firefighters Rescued 90-Year-Old Woman from Burning House 0 8

According to the Degpunktā program (TV3), several fire-rescue teams were dispatched in the evening to Pilss Street in Rezekne, where a utility building caught fire next to a residential house.

Thick smoke was visible from several kilometers away.

According to local residents, the alarm was first raised by neighbors who noticed smoke coming from the shed next to the house.

"We noticed it right away; my husband was mowing the lawn, and the fire started to appear. I called, and they dispatched the firefighters," a neighbor said.

The fire spread quickly — household items, car tires, a washing machine, and a wooden extension were burning.

Neighbors immediately rushed to warn the residents of the house. One man, who was working nearby in the garden, learned that the elderly owner was on the second floor and tried to reach her himself.

"I knocked, tried to get to the second floor, but I couldn't get through because the doors were on fire. I ran for a ladder, and then the firefighters arrived," a local resident said.

Three fire brigades arrived at the scene. By that time, the area of the fire had reached approximately 50 square meters, and the flames had already spread to a shed with firewood.

Rescuers had to act as quickly as possible — both the elderly woman and the man trying to save her remained inside the danger zone. Both were successfully evacuated. After their rescue, they were examined by medical personnel.

The man was freed relatively quickly, while the elderly woman was brought out more than an hour after the operation began. After the fire was extinguished, the pensioner was taken back home.

The cause of the fire has not yet been officially determined. According to neighbors, the fire could have started either due to faulty wiring or a gas cylinder.

The exact circumstances of the incident will need to be clarified by experts.
