Officers from the South Latgale Police Station this week initiated a criminal process for willful failure to comply with a court decision on protection from violence.

A man born in 1987 violated a prohibition on proximity by appearing at the residence of his ex-wife in the Augšdaugava region. This is the first case in the Latgale region where electronic surveillance has been used as a preventive measure.

On May 2, officers from the Investigation Department of the South Latgale Police Station initiated a criminal process under Article 168.1 of the Criminal Law for failing to comply with a court decision on temporary protection from violence. The man had previously arrived at his ex-wife's residence, thereby violating the court's prohibition on proximity and committing emotional abuse.

Assessing the circumstances of the case and the risk of repeated violence, the police applied to the court for a preventive measure in the form of electronic surveillance. The court granted the request, and on May 18, the measure was implemented. It is noted that this man had previously come to the attention of the police for violating court restrictions.

According to Article 168.1 of the Criminal Law, for willful failure to comply with a protection order against violence, a penalty of imprisonment for up to three years, short-term imprisonment, probation supervision, community service, or a fine is provided.

The police urge reporting cases of violence, as well as any information that may help prevent threats and ensure the safety of victims.
