A tragedy occurred in Modena, Italy: a car at high speed crashed into a group of pedestrians in the city center, after which the driver ran out of the car and began attacking people with a knife. At least 12 people were injured, some are in extremely serious condition.
The incident occurred on Via Emilia Centro. According to preliminary data, at least 12 people were injured in the attack, some of whom are currently in extremely serious condition with severe injuries. Numerous ambulances immediately arrived at the scene, and a helicopter service was deployed to evacuate the most critically injured patients. This was reported by the Italian publication La Repubblica.
Eyewitnesses describe the event with horror. According to them, the car was speeding down the central street at around 160 km/h, literally mowing down people in its path. Immediately after the crash, the driver stopped, jumped out of the car, and attempted to stab surviving pedestrians and those who rushed to help the victims.
The assailant tried to flee; however, police officers who arrived promptly were able to stop him. The attacker turned out to be a 30-year-old man who was arrested. The area of the incident was cordoned off by law enforcement to investigate the motives behind the attack.
In the editorial's opinion, the tragedy in Modena once again shows how vulnerable European cities remain to sudden acts of violence. Such attacks raise serious questions about safety in public places and the need to strengthen preventive measures and the rapid response of emergency services.
