Several vehicles collided on the Ventspils Highway near the Kemeri National Park after the BMW driver lost control and swerved into oncoming traffic. Two people sustained serious injuries, and traffic in the area was hindered.
A serious accident occurred yesterday afternoon on the Ventspils Highway near the Kemeri National Park. After the BMW swerved into oncoming traffic, three vehicles collided, significantly hindering traffic on the highway.
According to the State Police, the driver of the BMW was a woman born in 1992.
"The woman driving the BMW lost control of the vehicle, resulting in her swerving into oncoming traffic," said police representative Ruta Strautniece.
In the oncoming lane, the BMW collided with a Mercedes-Benz towing a trailer, driven by a man born in 1961.
After the impact, the trailer was thrown back into oncoming traffic, where it collided with a Honda driven by a woman born in 1964.
At the scene of the accident, heavily damaged vehicles were left behind. The front of the BMW was completely wrecked, and the windshield shattered into tiny pieces.
The Mercedes sustained serious damage both in the front and rear, where the trailer was attached. The trailer itself ended up on the opposite side of the highway after the collision.
As a result of the accident, the drivers of the BMW and Mercedes-Benz were injured.
Miks Ducis, a representative of the Emergency Medical Service, reported that medical assistance was provided to three people.
"Two of the injured were taken to the hospital in moderate condition," he noted.
Another person did not require assistance after examination.
Such accidents on rural roads are particularly dangerous due to high speeds and limited reaction time for other drivers. Even a brief loss of control over a vehicle can lead to a chain reaction of collisions.
The area near Kemeri is considered one of the busiest routes between Riga and Kurzeme, especially during the warm season when the flow of cars towards the coast significantly increases.
The reasons why the BMW driver lost control are yet to be determined by the police.
The accident on the Ventspils Highway once again highlighted how dangerous even a single swerve into oncoming traffic can be on a busy highway.
