The Latvian police informed their Lithuanian colleagues about the pursued BMW vehicle that crossed the border at Salociai. The suspects are linked to the theft of a large sum of money, and one possible participant has already been detained.
A large-scale operation is underway in Lithuania to search for suspects who, according to police, fled across the border after a major money theft in Latvia, LETA reports.
According to the Lithuanian Police Department, on Thursday around noon, Latvian police alerted their colleagues about a pursued BMW vehicle, whose driver ignored the demand to stop and crossed the Lithuanian-Latvian border near Salociai.
According to law enforcement, the individuals in the car are suspected of stealing a large sum of money.
Later, around 12:30, the BMW was found abandoned in a field near the village of Kraušiskiai in the Pasvalys district.
The suspects managed to escape.
To search for them, the police deployed extensive resources, including a border guard helicopter. A "Intercept" plan was also implemented, which is used in the search for particularly dangerous or fleeing criminals.
In fact, this is an international police operation involving the services of two countries.
About half an hour later, a Volkswagen Tiguan was stopped in the Kedainiai district, driven by a man born in 1985. The investigation believes he may be connected to the money theft in Latvia. The suspect was detained and placed in custody.
Meanwhile, the police continue to search for other possible members of the group.
So far, law enforcement agencies have not disclosed details about the amount stolen and the circumstances of the theft itself. It is only known that the investigation is related to crimes against ATMs.
Such crimes in the Baltic countries have often been committed by mobile groups in recent years, who quickly cross borders between countries to complicate police work.
Currently, Lithuanian and Latvian law enforcement agencies continue their joint investigation.
