A large number of rescuers were involved in extinguishing the fire in a five-story building in Riga, in Daugavgriva. The fire in one of the apartments engulfed the surrounding household items. The fire was so strong that the flames erupting from the second-floor balcony reached the apartment on the third floor and partially destroyed it.
A pile of belongings, cordoned off with red-and-white tape, is where firefighters continue to throw out more destroyed items from the apartment on the second floor, reports the show Degpunktā (TV3). The windows on the third and fourth floors were also blackened by black smoke. A large group of people watched the rescue workers at work in the yard. Some of them were residents of the building, while others arrived from more distant addresses, noticing that a large number of emergency service vehicles were heading to Lepju Street.
"According to reports, there are people living there who drink and so on. Yes, a person was injured, and he was taken away by ambulance," said a local resident.
The apartment was usually inhabited by elderly people. At the time the fire started, the residents were at home. Despite the fact that this occurred during daylight hours and people could react quickly, the fire managed to destroy the apartment on the second floor.
"The balcony measuring 10 square meters, the floor — 20 square meters, and furniture — 10 square meters were on fire. The balcony on the third floor, measuring 5 square meters, also caught fire. Upon arriving at the scene, we began operations, rescued a person from the burning apartment, and handed him over to emergency medical personnel, and a person from the third floor was also evacuated, having inhaled combustion products," said Kristaps Blums, commander of the 5th division of the Riga Regional Fire and Rescue Service.
The other residents of the building evacuated on their own. Currently, the cause of the fire has not yet been established, and the State Police is investigating it.
